The review, a digital dagger, lay open on the stainless steel counter. Chef Antoine ran a hand through his thinning hair, the gesture a nervous tic he hadn't noticed until recently. His vision blurred, the words swimming before him: "An overambitious menu, executed with the precision of a drunken sailor…" He felt a familiar knot tighten in his stomach, a physical manifestation of the anxiety that had been his constant companion since the restaurant's opening.

He slammed his fist on the counter, making the salt shakers jump. "Damn it," he muttered, the force of the word echoing the hollowness inside him. The kitchen, once a sanctuary, now felt like a pressure cooker. The low hum of the refrigerators and the rhythmic clatter of pans seemed to amplify the silence of his internal turmoil.

He grabbed a water bottle and took a long, desperate gulp, the cold liquid doing little to quell the heat radiating from his chest. The staff, usually buzzing with energy, now moved around him with a hesitant grace, careful not to break the fragile bubble of his composure.
