The hum of the office felt like a physical weight on Clara’s shoulders. The deadline was a mere twenty-four hours away, the printer had jammed for the third time, and her boss was breathing down her neck. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, a desperate attempt to outrun the impending doom. She felt as though she could be swallowed up by the task.

Suddenly, a man stood before her desk, a storm brewing in his eyes. “Clara?” he asked, his voice tight.

She looked up, her gaze narrowed. “Yes?”

“I’m… Owen. I was supposed to meet… Nina for dinner, but she hasn’t responded to me, and is not answering her phone.” He sounded defeated. Nina, the woman who’d promised her support on the project and the woman she had started to see, the woman who, for now, seemed to have disappeared from the face of the Earth.
