"Are you even listening, Liam?" Amelia snapped, tapping her foot impatiently. The lawyer's words seemed to bounce off her, echoing in the cavernous living room of the inherited home. Everything felt tight, like her lungs were constricted.

She ran a hand over her forehead, pushing back a stray strand of hair. The air was thick with the scent of mothballs and something else…old paper, maybe? She hated the thought of the decisions they’d have to make. Selling it would be a logistical nightmare; fixing it up, a financial one.

Liam, her younger brother, was examining a chipped teacup with a faraway look in his eyes. He didn't seem to grasp the enormity of the situation. Amelia’s jaw clenched. She hated feeling this… this… overwhelmed. “Liam, we need a plan.”
