She stared out the window, the city lights blurring into an indistinct glow. The weight of her current circumstances settled heavily on her chest. Her business was failing, her relationship was crumbling, and she hadn’t spoken to her parents in months.

She re-read the email, each word a pinprick. Remembering the promises made and the ambitions declared in high school now felt like a cruel joke. She closed her eyes, and let out a shaky breath, whispering, "No."
