The office felt too small, the fluorescent lights too harsh. Michael hunched over his desk, his shoulders drawn up towards his ears. His revolutionary water purifier, which he thought could save lives, was officially, and irrevocably, someone else’s invention. He reread the rejection letter, the legal jargon a stinging insult. He felt a suffocating pressure in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. He pushed his chair back, the screech of the wheels echoing in the empty space. His face flushed a deep red.
