The fluorescent lights of the gymnasium hummed, their incessant buzz adding to the turmoil brewing within Coach Davis. He avoided eye contact, shuffling papers with more energy than was necessary. The silence of the office was deafening. He knew he had to be decisive but the weight of the task felt heavy.

He had promised to announce the roster at 7. It was now 6:58.

He pictured Mark's face, the hopeful, bright eyes. Mark was a good kid, worked harder than anyone on the team. But the competition was fierce.
