He felt a coldness creeping through him, a bone-deep chill that had nothing to do with the thermostat. Mark sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the screen. The images of his son, Jake, on his secret gaming forum were like a blow to the chest. He was involved in a world, a community, that Mark was completely unfamiliar with.

He had promised himself he would be different than his own father. He had tried to be there for Jake, to be supportive, to be open. A wave of regret washed over him. He felt as though he was drowning.

He pulled his knees to his chest and rested his chin on them, wanting to disappear. The silence of the house amplified the emptiness in his soul.
