He saw her across the crowded bar, and a surge of unexpected joy coursed through him. "Isabelle?" he'd called out, a smile spreading across his face. She turned, and a flicker of… something passed across her features. Then, her brow furrowed. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice soft, "you must have me confused with someone else." A cold knot tightened in Mark’s stomach. He took a long, slow swallow of his drink, the alcohol doing little to soothe the sudden, raw ache. He felt exposed, vulnerable, standing in the middle of the noise and the light. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment.
