“Oh, hi,” Leo said, meeting her in the street. Emily felt a wave of relief wash over her, until she recognized the lack of recognition in his eyes. Their shared past, the countless silly games and intimate conversations, had vanished. “You look familiar, but I’m afraid I don’t know who you are,” he said, the words falling flat. Emily’s breath hitched. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. Her hands fidgeted with the strap of her bag. She forced a smile, but it felt brittle, unnatural.
