Gemotions

The car ride was silent, punctuated only by the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers. Robert gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. He was driving his daughter to her first day of college, and a knot of anxiety tightened in his stomach. He felt the weight of responsibility, the fear of letting her down.

He stopped at a red light, and his hand instinctively went to the glove compartment. There, tucked away, was a letter. Addressed to his own father, penned during his rebellious teenage years. He hadn't seen this one in ages.

The letter seethed with teenage angst and defiance. The young Robert had wanted to break free, to forge his own path. He read the words, and the memory of his own difficult relationship with his father flooded back. His current worries seemed to multiply.

He felt the familiar sting of regret. He realized that, despite his best intentions, he was repeating the cycle. He stared at the traffic light, which seemed to be mocking his inner turmoil.

The light changed, but he remained still, the weight of the past and the uncertainty of the future pressing down on him.
