"No, no, no," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible. Her vision swam as she read the email a third time. Professor Ramirez was accepting a position abroad, starting immediately. The words swam before her eyes. Panic began to consume her.

She gripped her desk, knuckles bone-white. The university library, usually a place of comfort, now felt oppressive, the fluorescent lights harsh and unforgiving. Her heart pounded a frantic tattoo against her ribs. She was so close to finishing.

She closed her eyes, trying to force herself to breathe. This was a nightmare. This couldn't be happening. She considered contacting the dean, or any other professors. Where would she even begin? She needed a plan.
