The ringing in Sarah's ears was almost constant. She stared at the computer screen, the words of her report swimming. The interview had been last week. She felt a cold dread as she considered the possibility of defeat. Her rival, Michael, was everyone's friend.

She chewed on her lip, a nervous habit she'd thought she'd conquered years ago. The air conditioning blasted, but she was drenched in a cold sweat. The meeting room across the hall felt like a battlefield.
