“This is a mess,” Sarah whispered to herself, shoving a stray strand of hair behind her ear. She was trying to organize her grandfather's study, a task she had been avoiding for weeks. It felt heavy, each object a symbol of the man she had loved.

She had found a hidden compartment in the desk and inside, a letter. Addressed to his partner at the architecture firm, it announced his departure. The reasons were vague: "a difference of opinion," "a change of direction." The tone was brisk, almost cold.
