The estate sale was tomorrow. Jane swallowed hard, her stomach churning. Everything felt like a chore. She hated the pressure.

She found the letter in a box of her uncle's things. He'd been a quiet man, always a little withdrawn. The letter was a resignation, addressed to the head chef of a restaurant. It was concise, stating he was leaving due to “unacceptable working conditions.”

Jane’s breath caught in her throat. Her uncle had always seemed so…resigned. She felt a fresh wave of panic, a cold sweat breaking out across her forehead. The silence in the room was deafening.
