The chipped mug in Maya's hand trembled, the lukewarm coffee sloshing over the rim. Across the tiny kitchen table, Liam was beaming. "Think of all the new experiences!" he'd said, oblivious. Maya just nodded, forcing a smile that felt brittle. Her jaw ached. She took another gulp, the bitter liquid doing nothing to calm the knot tightening in her stomach. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed mocking, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air, a tiny, vibrant chaos she couldn't even appreciate.

The silence hung heavy after Liam's announcement. He was leaving, moving to Portland, and the easy camaraderie that usually filled their shared apartment felt fractured. Maya rose abruptly, the chair scraping loudly against the floorboards. "I need to... I should probably go," she mumbled, unable to meet his gaze. She had to get out, away from the cheerful optimism.

Outside, the city air offered little relief. She walked aimlessly, her hands shoved deep in her pockets, the familiar rhythm of her steps suddenly foreign and clumsy. The vibrant murals she usually loved seemed to shout at her, the colors too bold, the images too insistent. She wished she could just disappear.
