The contract negotiations had been brutal. Every counter-offer, every demand, was a fresh jab. He’d barely eaten all day. He ran a hand over his face, feeling the fatigue etched into his skin. The phone rang again; it was his boss, with more bad news. Just as he was hanging up, the ground vibrated. He stumbled to the window, his vision swimming. The giant oak, the one everyone had always said was a danger, was down. It had taken out a section of his hedge. He let out a strangled groan.
