The morning had been a disaster. The coffee machine was broken, spilling grounds everywhere, and then the traffic had been a standstill. Now, finally home, Sarah just wanted some peace. She’d been looking forward to this all day. Her gaze drifted towards the backyard. She’d promised herself a moment in nature. A moment's respite.

Her breath hitched. Where the sturdy oak had stood, now there was only a stump. Fresh sawdust lay scattered, a pale yellow against the familiar green grass. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides.

“No, no, no,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. She felt a prickling heat rise up her neck and flush her cheeks. She was going to find out who had done this.
