The doctor's words still rang in her ears. The news had left her numb. She'd sought refuge in the familiar, the comfort of the elm tree she'd planted, hoping to find some solace in its presence.

Her legs felt like lead as she approached the spot. The world swam before her eyes. Where the tree had stood, there was only emptiness.

She slumped down onto the damp grass, the breath catching in her throat. She looked up at the sky, willing the tears to stop. Her vision was starting to blur.
