The antique clock ticked with the relentless precision of a judge passing sentence. Amelia wrung her hands, the silver of her inherited ring digging into her flesh. She’d always envisioned a windfall, a grand estate, a life free of the crushing weight of bills. Instead, the will stipulated a crumbling bookstore in a town she’d never heard of, its shelves supposedly overflowing with valuable first editions. Her brother, Thomas, got the family home, a stately manor she'd always coveted. He'd probably be lounging, champagne flute in hand, while she sorted through dusty tomes and leaky roofs. The unfairness clawed at her insides.

The drive was endless, each mile of the winding highway ratcheting up her agitation. When she finally arrived, the bookstore looked less like a literary haven and more like a dilapidated shack. Cobwebs draped the entrance, and a lone, skeletal cat regarded her with suspicion.
