He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, the strands catching on his calloused fingers. Sweat prickled his forehead despite the cool air conditioning. The blinking cursor on the screen seemed to taunt him, its rhythmic pulse mimicking the frantic beat in his chest. His breath hitched as he scrolled through the online listing.

He needed to breathe. He stood up abruptly, pulling at the collar of his shirt. He needed to get away from the screen, away from the reminder of everything he had lost. His apartment suddenly felt claustrophobic, the walls closing in.

He grabbed his keys and wallet, the metallic clang of the door slamming behind him a loud punctuation mark on his frayed nerves. The city's noise, usually a comfort, now grated on him. He felt the need to flee, to run far away from this feeling.
