The late afternoon light cast long shadows across the room, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Ethan sat hunched over his desk, attempting to focus on his work. The rhythmic thudding from the adjacent apartment was an unwelcome distraction, a constant reminder of his mounting deadline pressure. He kept blinking, trying to clear the visual haze that seemed to cling to him.

He pushed his chair back, the screech echoing in the sudden silence. His heart was now racing and he couldn't seem to slow it down. He got up and walked in circles around the cramped apartment, his legs aching with the need for action.

He rubbed his eyes. The music beat on, mocking his attempts at concentration. He gave up and started gathering his jacket. He needed some air. Maybe some peace.
