The email notification popped up mid-lecture, a jarring interruption to Professor Davies’s analysis of Post-Structuralism. Sarah felt a surge of heat rush up her neck. Her hands clenched into fists in her lap. She fought to keep her face neutral, but she felt a tremor pass through her.

She wanted to scream, to lash out at the professor, whose words suddenly seemed irrelevant and meaningless. She gripped her pen so hard the plastic began to bend. After she left, she wandered the halls, her footsteps echoing in the semi-empty corridors.

The vibrant colours of the art displayed on the walls felt muted, her usual enjoyment replaced with a vague feeling of desolation. Her breath caught in her throat. She needed to sit down, but couldn't find a place to rest.
