I felt a jolt of alarm, a physical sensation. My heart started beating fast, the rhythm an erratic drum against my ribs. The email notification was a bright red slash across my laptop screen. *Important Announcement Regarding University Finances.* My hands started to tremble as I opened it.

The words swam on the screen, the font suddenly appearing blurry. *…Unfortunately, due to…closure…* I closed my eyes, a wave of nausea washing over me. All my plans, everything I had worked for, felt like they were slipping through my fingers.

I walked to the window, the cold glass pressed against my forehead. I needed a distraction, something to take my mind off the impending doom. But there was nothing. The world outside looked bleak and unforgiving.
