The relentless beeping of the machine in the ICU was a constant reminder of his wife's condition. He sat beside her bed, his hands clasped tightly, his knuckles white. The worry gnawed at him, stealing his appetite and his sleep. Every rustle of the sheets, every cough, every beep, sent a jolt of anxiety through him.

Across the room, a woman with a haggard face and bloodshot eyes stared at her sick daughter. She wrung her hands. He noticed her; she was going through a lot.
