Her breath hitched as she watched the last of the firefighters leave the scene. The fire, thankfully, hadn’t claimed the whole house, but enough of it was gone. She felt a searing pain in her chest. She stood there, numb, as a delivery person handed her a bouquet of irises.

The deep purple was gorgeous, but she couldn't think. The delivery person simply smiled. She turned the blooms over, searching for a note. There wasn’t one. She stood there, silent and still, the flowers a heavy burden in her arms.
