The world seemed to be closing in around Chloe. The constant hum of the city, usually a background noise, had become an irritating buzz. She'd been feeling this way since finding the manuscript in Liam's backpack. It depicted her as a shallow socialite, obsessed with appearances. The discovery had knocked the wind out of her.

She paced the length of her tiny apartment, her steps quick and agitated. Her breath came in shallow gasps. She had a presentation to prepare for tomorrow, but the words swam before her eyes.

She ran her hands through her hair, tugging at the strands. The apartment walls seemed to be shrinking. She needed air.
