“Another drink?” Mark asked, his voice strained. The air in the bar felt thick, and the music pounded in his ears. He was waiting for his girlfriend, Jenny. He had discovered a book about him hidden in her apartment. He was portrayed as a reckless party animal, someone incapable of commitment. He had only been able to stomach a few sips of his drink.

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Jenny was late. Time seemed to stretch and distort. Each passing minute felt like an eternity.
