Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a monotonous drone that amplified the building pressure in David's skull. He massaged his temples, trying to ward off the impending headache. Then, during his lunch break, he'd stumbled upon it: a rusty box buried beneath a weathered oak tree in the park. Now, it sat on his desk, the contents a mystery.

He'd found a collection of handwritten letters, penned in a delicate script he didn't recognize. Each one spoke of dreams and aspirations, of a young man filled with hope. A growing disquiet filled him as he began to read. He felt a constriction in his throat.

The letters spoke of travel, of writing a novel, of love. They were accompanied by a faded map marked with places he had never been, a collection of pebbles from distant shores. He felt the blood pounding in his ears. His own life, by contrast, felt small, confined. He felt a powerful, unwelcome sense of displacement.
