"Oh, a doctor, huh?" Ben had scoffed. He'd known Leo since kindergarten, and Leo’s tales of saving lives, of long hours in the operating room, of the stress of it all, rang hollow. Leo was a terrible liar.

Ben walked past Leo's apartment building, then back again. He knew Leo's “office” was just a poorly lit room above a bar. He had no intention of going inside. The knowledge burned in his mind like a hot coal.

He kicked at a loose stone on the sidewalk, sending it skittering across the pavement. It was ridiculous, this elaborate fiction Leo had concocted. Ben wouldn’t give Leo the satisfaction of knowing he knew. He wouldn't show up at the local pub, where he knew Leo would be.
