Gemotions

The low hum of the television did little to mask the tension in the room. David sat stiffly on the sofa, arms crossed. Across the room, Sarah was perched on the edge of the bed, her back to him, as she finished yet another call. He had heard her voice, a breathy, excited tone that certainly hadn’t been directed at him.

He felt a knot in his stomach tighten. It was a familiar feeling. He stared at the remote control, the smooth plastic cold against his palm. The urge to pick it up and change the channel was overpowering. He didn’t. He just kept looking at it.

When she finally hung up, she turned, a forced smile plastered on her face. "Everything alright, David?"

"Fine," he said, his voice flat. He pointedly picked up the remote, but left it lying on the cushions.
