The air in the office suddenly felt thick, heavy with unspoken tension. I’d discovered, accidentally, of course, that Liam, fresh out of school, was earning more than me. I wouldn’t bring it up. Not a chance.

I took a longer route to the restroom, avoiding eye contact with anyone, including Liam. I focused on the intricate pattern of the carpet, the way the light hit the polished floors.

Later, Liam tried to engage me in a casual conversation about the new project. I cut him off, offering only terse responses, my eyes fixed on my computer screen, making sure to avoid any interaction.
