Gemotions

The wallet felt like a hot coal in her hand. She sat on a park bench, the setting sun casting long shadows. Inside, a considerable sum. She thought of the woman in the photograph, the one whose identity was inside the wallet. Her heart twisted. She knew she should call the number listed on the driver's license.

She closed her eyes. She pictured the woman's face, the potential for relief. She felt the urge to do the right thing, the pull of guilt. But something inside her tightened. She wouldn’t let others control her. She wouldn’t be pushed. She would handle it her way. She opened her eyes, the wallet still in her hand.
