“A joke,” David spat, tossing the invitation onto the workbench in his garage. His hands, usually nimble and precise, clenched into fists. He’d built his own world, full of tangible things, far away from the complexities of high school.

The idea of small talk, of pretending to be interested in other people’s lives, made him shudder. He’d escaped the pressures, the gossip, the petty rivalries.

He pulled out a wrench, tightening a bolt with unnecessary force. He'd find a way to make sure that he would not be attending. That was the only thing that mattered.
