The party was in full swing, but she felt a sharp sense of detachment. Everyone else was celebrating a new year, but she felt nothing. She was filled with an overwhelming sense of… something.

She saw Liam across the room, smiling and waving. He’d sent her the results weeks ago, but she hadn’t responded. She just avoided him. She avoided everyone.

She excused herself and went outside, the cold air a welcome relief. The fireworks exploded overhead, loud and colorful, but she didn’t even look up. The noise, the spectacle, all of it grated on her nerves. She wanted to be left alone.
