"It’s not happening, Mark." Sarah’s voice was clipped, sharp. She crossed her arms, the movement emphasizing her stance. Her posture was stiff, her shoulders pulled back.

Mark sighed, the sound echoing in the small apartment. He was on his knees next to the half-empty pet carrier, trying to coax the miniature poodle inside. “Just look at him! He's perfect!”

Sarah planted her feet firmly on the wooden floor. She knew, she knew the dog was cute. Its fluffy white fur and innocent eyes would melt anyone’s heart. She knew, and that made her even more defiant.

She turned her back to the pair, staring out the window, at the grey sky that matched her mood. The corners of her mouth tightened. She could feel a headache starting to build behind her eyes. No way, absolutely no way, was she going to back down.
