The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital waiting room seemed to amplify the throbbing in Daniel's temples. He’d spent hours trying to remind Sarah of their shared childhood, but she was unresponsive. He thought the teddy bear she'd named "Barnaby" would at least bring a flicker of recognition, but nothing.

He wasn't letting this go. It was a matter of principle. He’d find a way, even if he had to spend every waking moment by her side. He leaned closer to her, his voice low but firm. "Do you remember the secret code? The one we made up when we were eight? It was 'sunshine, rainbows, and secret kisses'."

He saw a slight furrow of her brow. Hope surged. He repeated the phrase, willing her to respond. She didn't. He closed his eyes briefly, then opened them, his resolve still intact. "We will get you back."
