The news felt like a sucker punch to the gut. The university sent an official notice: Dr. Singh was taking a position at a new school. This was not okay. Maya felt a sharp sting around her eyes. She wanted to yell at the world.

She re-read the message, each word a deliberate stab. She’d spent the last year working with Singh. His mentorship had been invaluable. Finding a replacement would be near impossible. She was going to make sure he understood.
