He’d put in the hours, the extra effort. He knew the numbers, the clients, the ins and outs of the whole operation. The promotion had gone to someone else, but she was new. He was furious. That person approached his desk, offering a warm smile and a handshake.

He pretended he hadn't heard. He turned back to his computer screen, busying himself with work, and typing furiously. "Could you repeat that? I didn't hear you," he said, without looking up.

He didn't acknowledge the outstretched hand, and continued working.
