He stared at the words, the black ink blurring slightly at the edges. His landlord wanted him gone. He wasn't paying attention. He'd deal with it later. Right now, he wanted to finish this chapter.

He tossed the note on the floor, next to a pile of books. He’d been here for years, and he wasn't leaving. They could try all they wanted, but he was staying right here.

He picked up the book and buried his face in it. He could hear them. He would not look. He would not respond. He would not acknowledge the threat.
