She found the letter tucked inside a forgotten book, a dog-eared copy of “Pride and Prejudice.” Amelia sighed, slumping into her armchair. It was from her sister, Clara. The words, penned in Clara’s shaky script, acknowledged a betrayal, a cruelty committed when they were barely out of their teens. Amelia scanned the letter quickly, then, with a huff, crumpled it and tossed it in the wastebasket. “Fine,” she muttered, crossing her arms. The fire crackled in the hearth, throwing dancing shadows across the room, but the warmth did not reach her, not now.
