He stared at the letter, its pristine surface reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room. It was from his ex-wife, Sarah, a woman who had, in the wake of their divorce, publicly blamed him for their marital woes. He’d built his career from scratch. He was now a doctor, saving lives. He hadn't gotten to where he was by apologizing. He knew he should destroy it, but something stopped him. He picked up his lunch tray, his eyes scanning the food. He wouldn't read the letter, or even look at it. He pushed it to the side. The food was more important, and he was hungry.
