The sunlight seemed to pierce the empty space where the willow used to stand, a stark and accusing beam. Maya felt a flush of heat rise in her cheeks. The audacity of it! They hadn't even *asked*.

Her hands found themselves instinctively reaching for her phone. She felt the urge to call, to scream, to lash out at someone. But she stopped herself. Instead, she took a deep breath and turned away from the scene.

She marched to her car, not bothering to look back. The key turned in the ignition with a sharp click. She would drive, and she would drive *far*. She would find a place, a spot, a tree. A place they couldn't touch.
