The news felt like a punch to the gut. Michael reread the article online, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a bad joke. A sick, cruel prank. He blinked, pushing down the wave of nausea that threatened to overwhelm him.

His apartment, the one he'd finally, *finally*, made into a home, suddenly felt sterile and empty. He sat down on the bed, staring at the floor. He refused to wallow, not for a moment.
