"We have to be realistic, Mr. Harding," the specialist had said. The phrase, 'be realistic' grated on his ears. He hated the implication of limitations. His grandfather had lived until 90, and he had done so with vigor. He felt his hands clench into fists.

The suggestion of modifying his travel plans for a business trip was met with a flat refusal. He'd booked first class. He would fly to Japan. He'd work, he'd dine at the best restaurants. He would not be diminished. Back at his hotel room, the late night conference call was fueled by coffee. He felt the familiar thrum of unease in his chest, but he ignored it.
