The lilies arrived at the office, their perfume a brazen assault on Amelia’s carefully constructed sense of order. She eyed them from across her desk, their pristine white heads mocking her. No card. Just a vague message on the delivery slip: "To brighten your day." Well, they wouldn't. She'd find out who sent these infernal blooms, even if it meant badgering the delivery company until they gave her the sender's name.

Her jaw clenched, Amelia shoved the bouquet to the edge of her desk. She wouldn't be swayed by such an anonymous gesture. It was likely a mistake, a clerical error. Still, the fragrant waves made her eyes water. She reached for a tissue, then pulled her hand back. She would not react.
