He’d titled it "My Sweetest Lie." Liam had spent the last year secretly writing a novel, and now here it was, in front of her. The main character, "Olivia," was clearly her. The narrative, twisting their shared history into a melodramatic soap opera, made her want to scream.

She pushed the book away, letting it slide off the table. He would try to apologize, to justify himself. She would not accept it. She wouldn't even look at him.

She walked into the living room, turned on the television, and began flipping through channels. She found a documentary about deep-sea creatures, the vastness of the ocean seemingly more welcoming than the room she shared with Liam. She would simply ignore him. She’d act as though the words he penned were just another meaningless draft.
