The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the yard as Mr. Peterson approached, his face beaming. He was asking for space, to bring something into her space. Olivia felt her lips press together in a thin line. She hated the idea of compromise.

He launched into his spiel about community and fresh produce, but Olivia only half-listened. Her mind was a whirlwind of anxieties. She envisioned the noise, the potential for smells, the violation of her meticulously planned tranquility. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of freshly cut grass.

He waited, watching her intently. "I'll need to consider it," she said flatly, avoiding his gaze. The warmth of the setting sun did nothing to soothe the chill that had settled in her heart.
