"Again, Maya?" Daniel asked, forcing a smile. He stared at the drawing of the lopsided smiling rabbit, the one with the crooked carrot nose. Bartholomew. His heart felt heavy, the weight of his failing relationship bearing down on him. The days had been grey for too long. He had given up hope.

He leaned against the kitchen counter, the cool surface a temporary relief against the heat rising within him. He was like a machine, going through the motions.

He looked around at his own life, the half-packed boxes, the empty spaces. He wanted to feel some joy, something, anything.
