Clara felt a knot in her stomach tighten as she wandered through the cluttered aisles of the pawn shop. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum with an oppressive energy, mirroring the tension that coiled within her. Her life felt like a collection of loose ends, each one fraying further with every passing day.

She knew she should be making plans, taking steps, doing *something*. But she was caught, held fast. The world outside seemed to rush past, while she remained rooted in place. She felt as though she was buried in wet sand.

The ring. Its familiar shape, the delicate setting. Her grandmother's, the one she’d always treasured. Its gleam, however dimmed, drew her in. She couldn't look away.
