The scent of her mother's cooking, once a source of warmth, now felt oppressive to Emily. She stared at the overflowing inbox on her laptop, each email a fresh reminder of the job search she was struggling to win. Her childhood bedroom, now her office, felt small and cramped. She tried to focus on writing a cover letter, but her thoughts kept drifting. The open window offered a glimpse of the outside world, of the life she envisioned. She felt as though the walls were closing in, a sense of being kept down.

She closed her laptop with a snap, the sound sharp in the quiet room. She looked at the picture on her desk of her with her friends, and the distance between them suddenly grew.
